I have a 99 v10 120k, just recently it started making a noise. It sounds like a lifter slapping in a old pushrod motor. Sitting there at idle, it will tick for a few and then go away, then comes back. Well driving you can hear it loudest just before it shifts with light to no throttle. Please help, I'm about ready to trade this thing in on a PSD. Also motor runs fine doesn't miss. HELP, if I had any hair I would pull it out.
dew, what was your situations with your truck. I'm pretty darn close to dealing this thing off. The only thing that confuses me is that the sound comes and goes. It does it all the time, but like I said it stops then starts, very noisy just as the rpm hang before it shifts.
Well my 2 cents....... Exhaust leak is most common which is why you hear that from everyone. Something I have seen on them also is the timing tensioners get an internal leak, cant hold full tension on the chain at low rpm. higher rpm's ok.... The tensioners run off of oil pressure. Verify where you hear the noise coming from mostly front, sides, rear, under......... Well let us know how you make out..
Well other than my exhaust leak which is now fixed by putting headers on, I had a spark plug on the verge of blowing out. It had become loose and was causing a tick... as well as a miss which most people have not reported with a plug on the verge of blowing out. It is a RPM dependent tick and can be heard at any time regardless of idle, accel, or deccel. Luckily I took it in to get looked at for the miss and they caught the plug before it actually shot out.
Work on the pos tonight, it does not make the sound when it's cold. I had to let it idle for about 10 minutes and then rev it up to produce the sound. Any ideas, hope this helps.
