Ball Joints...1998

How hard is it to replace ball joints? I've replaced tie rod end myself. How long of a job am I looking at? The shop wants close to $1000 to do them and a idler arm.

Do it youself. See if you have a shop in your area that does press work, or pick up a harbor freight ball joint press. Pull the arm and take it down with the new ball joint and have it pressed in. Considering it is a little more involved than the tie rods (scew on/ screw off>press in) definitely don't skimp on the quality of the ball joint. I have all Moog components on my steering and suspension and their great (and greasable). And the idler arm was simple too. Ball Joint seperater and a couple of bolts and your done. Torque the nut on the ball to about 65 ft-lbs on the idler arm and about 100 on the lower ball joint. Then take it and have it aligned. Buying better brand components and all the tools if you don't already have them you're still way under $1000
