Gears, Gears

How does one tell what gears are in their Ex? Is it printed somewhere, on the axle, on the door? Please advise.

On the back axle, theres a tag with a code on it. I believe its in the driver door jam as well. Find that code, do a search for the codes and match it. Or wait till somebody else responds with them.

On the back axle/rear end/pumpkin/third member/differential/final drive or whatever you want to call it there is a tag with 3.73, 4.10 etc. It's on the door jamb also if you want to look it up.

I will have to go look for it. So the tag will definitely say 3.73 or 4.10? Not just a code?

I had a real hard time finding mine as well. The tag on the differential had some sort of code, not the ratio, and it is blank on the sticker on the door jamb. If you have a 4wd drive you might look at the front axle. I found a sticker on the underside of the front axle that said plain as day 3.73.

Some Ex's have the code on the door/door jamb sticker...some don't.

Allen,

haha...I just book mark and organize what I feel is useful information so I can easily find it...that's all!

I do have soft copies of my Excursion manual as well as a dealer sales book that has all kinds of useful information...but for the most part...many of these questions come up time and time again so I just started filing them away for easy location when needed is all...but thanks for the compliment!

Joe

If you have a 1999-2007 diesel, you have 3.73 gears. The only reason you have 4.10 or 4.30 gears is if you have a dually.

Gas trucks have a multitude of options...

Thanks for all the info gentlemen!! This site is awesome. I will crawl under the Ex later this afternoon, most likely the front - and after I look at the door label.

And since I have a diesel, I assume it is 3.73. But why is that the case? And how would my 6.0L run if I put 4.10's in her??

Or for the universal answer to Why? -- 'Why Not?'

Really, is there a mechanical reason Ford did not offer it with the diesel engine? Wouldn't the diesel set up be that much more able if it had a 4.10? Especially for pulling and heavy stuff??

I know the mod is awesome, but there has to be an explanation for that.....

My tag was on the rear axle (not the front) and it said 4.10. Lucky me but I wish it was a tru-trac.
