hi im new here just looking for some help, ive heard different stories about tools needed to remove rotors from the excursion. its for the front, some say u need special tools others say its easy with regular tools, which is it. any help appreciated.
If you are replacing the rotors, it will be a little easier, as you don't have to worry about wrecking the rotors removing them. When I removed mine, they were rusted on pretty good, it took a fair amount of beating to get them to break loose....good release of built up anger. No special tools are required.
After the caliper and mounting bracket are romoved, and held up with wire or bungee, you just need to slide off the rotor, this is where the beating may come in handy.
I like to use a big C clamp, say in the 10" or so range to push the piston back in the caliper. If you bottom the pad against the caliper, it's easier to install it with the new pads.
You need to pull the dust cap off the center portion of the hub. I tap it with a hammer on one side to get it to pop off. (see photo) Mine is a bit dented.
Underneath you'll find a castle nut with a cotter pin. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut and then use a socket or an adjustable wrench to remove the nut. The rotor will slide off.
thanks for the help guys now i feel better about not taking it to the dealer. i was looking at close to $600 now ill save alot of money doing it myself. should get to it this weekend if not the one after, ill let u guys know how it went.
If I remember correctly, the 4x4s cannot have the bearings repacked due to them being integrated into the hubs. I'm not 100% certain though so you should do a search to get a definative answer.
