2wd or 4wd?

Well, actually, neither need a special tool. Sockets , a breaker bar and a ratchet is all I use.

If you are replacing the rotors, it will be a little easier, as you don't have to worry about wrecking the rotors removing them. When I removed mine, they were rusted on pretty good, it took a fair amount of beating to get them to break loose....good release of built up anger. No special tools are required.

After the caliper and mounting bracket are romoved, and held up with wire or bungee, you just need to slide off the rotor, this is where the beating may come in handy.

I like to use a big C clamp, say in the 10" or so range to push the piston back in the caliper. If you bottom the pad against the caliper, it's easier to install it with the new pads.

WAIT! Don't go hittin' the rotor!!!

You need to pull the dust cap off the center portion of the hub. I tap it with a hammer on one side to get it to pop off. (see photo) Mine is a bit dented.

Underneath you'll find a castle nut with a cotter pin. Remove the cotter pin and castle nut and then use a socket or an adjustable wrench to remove the nut. The rotor will slide off.

Repack the bearings while you're in there.

If I remember correctly, the 4x4s cannot have the bearings repacked due to them being integrated into the hubs. I'm not 100% certain though so you should do a search to get a definative answer.

???

The Excursion uses 4 wheel disc. The rears do have drum style parking brakes that actuate inside the center portion of the rotor.

What are you trying to accomplish?
