A/C Gauges

I had on question on which gauges to buy. I have to repair a leak and refill my car which had R134. I see now a direct replacement I believe designated 12A is readily available for R134 systems which some people tell me is even better. Is anyone familiar with this 12A as I'm wondering since I have to purchase gauges anyways, if the R12/R22/R502 gauges will work as they would be more versatile for other jobs or if I need the R134 specific ones? And yes I realize with the first I would need the adapters for R134 fittings.
And yes I am familiar with A/C repairs as I am a licensed mechanic, I just have'nt done it for a few years since the days of R12 in everything. Thanks for now.

Stick with 134a. It is what all cars use now, and you will create a mess if you try to modify it with some other "super" refrigerant. If you are working on cars, all you need are gages for 134a and maybe R12 if you work on cars made before the early 90's when R134a became the std. I think Ford was 100% R134a by '93 or '94.

93 was the worst ba$tard year. By 94, everything was R134a.
