Harbor Freight Vacuum Pump fitting that will fit R134A manifold gauge set
BigNish
I'm getting ready to convert my 86 F150 A/C from R12 to R134a. I have already had the system cleared of R12 and I bought a Vacuum Pump from Harbor Freight to evacuate. I also purchased an Interdynamics Manifold Gauge Set for R134. PROBLEM: fitting on vacuum pump is for R12 hoses and my R134 gauge set won't work. ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND A COMPATIBLE FITTING FOR THE R134A SYSTEM. I checked with auto parts stores, Lowes, Home Depot, Plumbing Supply Places, A/C parts warehouses with no luck.

Wouldn't a fitting from the conversion kit work? It screws overtop of the original r12 fitting and has locktight on the threads. Problem is, can you get this fitting seperate? It comes in the kit and I would hate to have to buy two kits just for the fitting. Buy the kit, and if it will work, ask for a conversion fitting instead of a whole new fitting.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 10:40 AM (EST)]Could you take a 'can-tap' kit and cut the hose, use a barbed fitting that would screw onto the vacuum pump and insert that into the remainder of the can-tap hose. The can-tap must fit onto the quick disconnect fittings, or it would be useless.
By the way, the Harbor Freight vacuum pump is not very good. Better than nothing, but not very good. You might do better to gin up a bunch of fittings etc and use the compressor itself as a vacuum pump. It sure should be able to push/pull a lot of air. Just leave the pressure side open, and all the pump is doing is trying to pull a vacuum.
Free advice, and worth every penny

Just re-read the post. You need a 'male' quick disconnect to an R-12 fitting. I know that good vacuum pumps come with a fitting that has both R12 and R134a fittings. Should be able to find one at:
http://www.ackits.com/ or http://www.acsource.com/ Free plugs, no commission or kick back... They are good to deal with
