A couple of times recently, my 05 6.0 (93K miles) wouldn't start - once after driving about 10 miles then sitting 10-15 minutes it eventually started two hours later, yesterday after driving it 5-6 miles it wouldn't start an hour later, but did about an hour after that...
I searched this and found that it sounds kind of like the HPOP problems I read about here, except that it's only done it twice in the past couple of weeks. Is that consistent with this problem just getting started, or is there something else I need to look for?
My new to me '05 w/ 66,000 miles is in the shop for the same thing. I noticed it taking a little longer to start, and then after a 10 min drive. It wouldn't start at all. 1.5 hrs later, it started right up.

Any input will be appreciated.
Classic STC (Snap To Connect) fitting on the High Pressure Oil Pump leaking or failure.
This fitting works it's way loose and leaks oil. When the oil is warm it is thinner and more oil leaks out of this fitting causing a no start when warm. When cold the oil is thick enough to create higher pressures to "fire" the injectors.
Bradcollision is exactly right. Same thing happened to me. If its an '05,(depending on build date) it will be covered under warranty $100 deductible at any dealer. It should also be throwing a DTC. It is definately frustrating....but this site will help you everytime. This site is how I found out about this issue. There was no recall on the poorly designed Snap-to-connect fitting in the HPOP, so they hope that customers warranty runs out before the issue rears its ugly head. Out of warranty would have cost me $1,200.00....get them to fix it before it does any damage to the HPOP.
Depending on build date? Mine say's 02-05 on the door sticker, does that qualify?
It's good to know that it at least might be covered under warranty. I'll take it in to the dealership next week and see what they have to say. It hasn't needed anything beyond regular maintenance since I've had it (the last 2 years/40K miles), so this'll be my first time to try to get anything warranteed on it...
02-05, your'e just about 3 months out of the 5yr warranty.lots of peole on the site have fixed this problem themselves. if your'e outta warranty and good with a wrench i'd do some research on it before you pay to have it done.i still kick myself real hard about having ford change my egr cooler......stupid,stupid,stupid!.when you need help this is the place to go!.
LOL - I wasn't even thinking about the 5 years, just about being under 100K. I usually go over miles way before I run out of time, so I hadn't even stopped to think about how old it is...
Quick update; I finally got it in to the dealership Wednesday afternoon, they too said it sounded like the HPOP and that'd be covered under warranty. I also told them that it seemed like it was taking longer to pick up under quick acceleration (like making a left turn in traffic) and they said they'd check that out. I've been having some issues with the trans temp gauge and tow/haul light as well, and asked them to check into that, too.
They called back Thursday morning and said they were going to repair the HPOP and the EGR under warranty. The tranny gauge issue they said would require a new sensor and trannsmission wiring harness, and would cost $585 (including new fluid and filters) - more than I'd hoped on that issue, but since it looks like the other stuff will be covered under warranty, getting out under $700 on the whole deal doesn't seem too bad. Just keeping my fingers crossed that this takes care of everything.
I'll post when I get it back and let you know how it turns out.
Same problem up here in Canada with my 05 King Ranch 6 litre. No warm start problems so I took it to the dealer and he changed the icpm then it left me stranded for 2 1/2 hours 2 days later. Back to the dealer talked to the tech and he agreed to look at the STC fitting and HPOP but only after I put a Ford oil filter on and throw out the after market filter which was 2 weeks old! I 1200 miles of warranty left so I want to make sure the diagnosis is correct. Cheers!
Well, I got it back Tuesday, actually. I've driven it about three hundred miles, almost all of it pulling a trailer - sometimes loaded heavy, sometimes not, and I'm happy to report that all of the aforementioned problems seem to be gone.
At this point, I'll say it looks like they (the dealership) did a good job, and they were great to work with. Kudo's to the crew at Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK.
O rings in the HPOP, a new EGR valve assembly, replaced the temp gauge sensor and wiring harness on the transmission, and serviced the transmission. The HPOP and EGR stuff was under warranty, so I payed the $100 on that, the transmission stuff ended up costing about $575.
The truck runs and drives great and pulls really well, too. I don't think it's getting quite the mileage it could (daily driving around the farm without a trailer runs 13-14, highway's around 16 (unloaded) - maybe 17 if I drive 60'ish). In hopes of increasing mileage, I'm seriously considering a mild tune and/or exhaust mods, but it runs so well and has been so completely reliable (except for the HPOP issues) that I'm kind of afraid to mess with a good thing. I really like it, and I'm thinking that I'll be driving this one awhile (the 2 years I've already had it is about as long as usually keep one), so reliability and longevity are really important to me.
