While GM and Chrysler shut down Ford retools and will increase some production

Ford to change some production lines and build more vehicles;

Ford will convert Mich. truck plant to build new Focus
Ford will convert Mich. truck plant to build new Focus - ABC News
"We're changing from a company focused mainly on trucks and SUVs to a company with a balanced product lineup that includes even more high-quality, fuel-efficient small cars, hybrids and all-electric vehicles," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of The Americas.

This I hope means that Ford will be around to keep on making the trucks that we love. While the trucks may not be the focus of Fords product line They will not be forgotten.

Yesterday, 5/8, Ford closed @ $6.26, up .41 cents. By comparison GM closed @ $1.66 down .19 cents.

Purely an "economic" observation...

Ford can build all the economy cars it wants to. The consumers however, at a $2.10 national average for gas, still seem to prefer trucks.

consumers also do not buy electric vehicles in any quantity worth mentioning (given that the cost to recharge at a 10cent/kwh is significantly more expensive)

and scndsn - I sure as hell hope yesterday was not '5/8' or Im truly screwed

It would seem that the new Focus is selling quite well.

Against the advice of my broker, I bought a few hundred myself. When he cautioned me more, I told him it was less than what I paid for cable last year.

I really love the first sentence... "We're changing from a company focused mainly on trucks and SUVs..." like they openly admitted they'd create a fiasco.

I really should bought some stocks, as well. I'm kicking myself for that.

Ford really has no choice. They sold some nearly 300k less trucks in 2008 than in 2004. The Focus is a great deal though IMHO is still a little pricey for what your getting. The best part about the way Ford outfits this car is that you get all the safety equipment, AC, a nice stereo and a nice interior standard where as you pay out the nose for nose items when you purchase a Honda, Toy or Nissan.

Around here, gas just jumped $.10 per gallon. It'll get high again and the Focus and Fiesta will do better than ever.

I also noticed (in the article)that at that plant, Ford will be producing the all electric Focus for the 2011 model year......meanwhile GM has had to delay the Volt until possibly 2011.

Damn...knew I should have bought Ford stock back when it was around $2.00....maybe I should go buy some now????
