Ford can build all the economy cars it wants to. The consumers however, at a $2.10 national average for gas, still seem to prefer trucks.
consumers also do not buy electric vehicles in any quantity worth mentioning (given that the cost to recharge at a 10cent/kwh is significantly more expensive)
and scndsn - I sure as hell hope yesterday was not '5/8' or Im truly screwed

And secondly.....every report i've ever seen says electric cars would be much much cheaper to run than a gas vehicle....
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha .... 1400??? seriously???

year to date as of May 1 Ford has sold 440140 vehicles.
Of those,
162315 were cars.
277825 were trucks.
As of the same date ford had 16% of the US market, compared to 21% for GM, and GMs cars slipped even further from trucks.
When all is said and done, I expect 2009 to have about 52% of the vehicles sold industry wide in the US be trucks. (consider that some heavy selling makers in the US, have little or no truck presence in the US)
Job scares and credit scarcity being equally applied to all vehicles, the tipping point seems to be fuel costs and virtually nothing else.

I retired out of Fords Livonia Trans Plant and my oldest son works there and he's on the new 6 spd job and he says they've been bringing in new machinery for future production increases and adding a new shift. Plus, there's rumors of a new job coming in, building the trans for the Fiesta.

Lutz & several other GM execs dumped their remaining stock @ a buck sixty-one this week in response to not being able to come to agreement with bond holders in time for the June 1st bankrupcy deadline. That took GM to $1.15. Sad, very sad.
Ford on the other hand issued a bunch of new shares so investment banks (the same ones in trouble) could buy them up & inject new cash into Ford. Helps Ford, makes the troubled banks look better, but hurts the small investor. Cuts down on the dividend % that our shares eventually pay.

Another sinking ship that us taxpayers will be forced to keep afloat. I noticed that since Chrysler went into bakruptcy, I have not seen one ad from them, then saw yesterday that the fed is only letting them spend half of what they wanted to on advertising.

Ford should make out well with Chrysler in bankruptcy and GM quickly headed that way. Justly or not, few will buy vehicles from a company in or on the verge of bankruptcy and that will increase Ford's market share considerably.
To say that cars like the Fusion and others won't work in $2 gas environment is rediculous. Lots of people want cars. It's evident by how many Camrys, Civics, and Corollas are on the road even when gas was $1. The problem was that the "big 3" weren't making anything that people wanted. Now they have better cars and people are buying them. I would like to have a car, but the wife wanted an SUV for kids. After they are grown, I would like to go back to a truck and a car.
As for Ford stock, I really missed the boat on that as well. But at the time that it was 1-2 dollars, it was a gamble anyway. I bought a little, made about 90% profit and got out. IMO now is not the time to buy as it's still close to the top of its 52 week moving average. I'll get back in around $3 if it goes that low. Of course I could be wrong again.

The wife has a Focus. I like it. Very peppy. Sips gas. Comfortable interior.
My only complaint is she didn't get cruise control. I thought she agreed to get that, but she changed her mind.
Now she has to drive on the longer trips because I hate being on the highway without cruise.
