First thanks for all the info here. This is my first post but have been reading for about a year.
Just replaced the sensor on the differential, when I pulled out the old one it had metal fragments on it lube on it seemed dry like graphite. want to change the lube now to check the inside for damage. Only problem is where and what kind of damage should I look for and at what point do I decide to call the wrecker. I should add i plan to do this myself (just the fluid change) with all four on the ground (tires).
I have a '99 f250 7.3 new to me 2 years ago, 164,000 miles Bilstein shocks, firestone airbags otherwise all stock. pictures would be great, all advise appreaciated.

Welcome to FTE! Stick around but beware, if you stick around too much your truck won't stay stock long
Like Chase said, check out that link. If it's light graphite looking stuff on there, pull the inspection plug also, it will be on there as well, should be normal wear, had it on mine. Its big pieces you got to worry about(teeth) in the bottom of the housing when you take off the rear pan cover. After you remove the cover and let the fluid drain, put your fingers down in the bottom of the housing towards where the pan connects, if there's teeth chunks you'll feel them. You should be ok. Welcome to FTE..
