Differences in 7.3 Engine from 95-00

These engines look to be interchangeable, are they? I believe the injectors, turbo, intake, and things like that are different, and would have to be swapped out. I have a lead on a very low mile 96 7.3 engine, and my 00' has a cracked block , so I was wondering if i could swap it. That would also be a perfect time for some upgrades, definitely bellowed up-pipes.

Thanks for the help.

Fuel pump is also mechanical in the older ones. It sits in the valley under the turbo. Not sure if you can plug it off or what there. All the rest like injectors, HPOP, turbo & all associated piping, etc. should be able to be moved from yours to the "new-old" engine.

The OBS uses a fuel pump in the valley, so you'll have to find a way to plug that hole. Injectors, turbo, HPOP, and intake plumbing are different.
Edit- dangit, fast fingers Joe beat me to it

Joe and Chase are right about the mechanical fuel pump on the 96, but there's no holes to plug that I'm aware of. Well, now that I'm thinking of it, I think there's a soft plug (like a press in plug) that might need to be installed. Here's a pic of the SD motor and I bet that's what the plug is for in the valley.

As they've said, the intake pluemns, turbo, pedestal, up-pipes, hpop, fuel system, injectors all need to be swapped. Also the engine wiring harness will need to be changed to the SD. The timing/water pump cover is also different between the 2. You'll need to swap that as well. The hpop resevior etc. will go with it. Last but not least, the a/c and alternator brackets need to be swapped cause they are reversed on the 96. Same bolt holes so it's easy.

Hope that helps!!

If you want to get really ambitious, the cam is different too because the SD cam doesn't have the lobe to run the mechanical fuel pump on it.

AWESOME pic, Ryan! Is that a late engine? I remember seeing some possible mounting spots in my valley, but I never looked that close to see if there was a plug or if the mold was changed to cover the old fuel pump area.

I'd wager a guess that's the motor out of the wrecked 00 he bought recently.

Thanks Joe! Yeah, Chase is right. It's the motor that's going into the dually. Came out of a 2000. Usually that plug is SOOOO packed and covered full of crap and crud that you can't see it, but this pic was taken after I had scrubbed and scrubbed on the engine to get it clean. The 4 mounting holes around it are where the OBS fuel pump mounts. The block is the exact same mold, they just put a press in plug in the superduties.

Excellent info on the cam Chase. I was wondering what made the mech pump work!!

Yeah, I know this is an old thread but relevant to my question. Would a '96 7.3 have the oil cooler jets on the rods? Concerning the short block would a '96 be mechanically equal to a '03 other than the pmr rods and the extra lobe on the cam? OK and the front cover.

Taking a look at the "coffee table" books should help in seeing the differences between the motors: Diesel Technician Society
