Alt/voltage regulator ?

My truck battery is not recharging. The volt meter gauge drops slowly after I get it running. Headlights get dim. Battery is new,but will get it checked. There is a magnetic pull on the back of the alt (maybe that's a old tale). If I replace the alternator, which one should I get 50,60,70,or 100 amps. Truck is 79 F-150 4x4 400 V-8 ,C-6 came with ps,pb,a/c,cruise.Could it be the voltage regulator ? Should the voltage regulator be matching to the alt ? Is there an after market upgrade that I could do.I am in the local VFD,so I do plan on adding lights and sirens at some point.Just trying to do this once. Thanks for your help.

its possible that the voltage regulator could be bad... although in the different dentsides i've owned over the years have never seen one go bad... i would pull the alt and have it checked. not quite sure on the amperage that lights and sirens pull but i would think a 70 amp alt should be effiecent.... dont know what u mean by voltage reg matching to the alt.... but i dont believe the voltage reg measures amps just volts.
