Hey Im new to the forum and it seems like you have tons of information available. I have been looking but cant seem to find just what im looking for here so im wondering if someone could help me out.
My problem is that i bought a 99 F350 diesel and it didnt come with a radio. but i could tell that it has been hooked up pretty nicely before because its a regular cab with four speakers, tweeters mounted into the doors, and had wires for an amp. he took out the radio and amp and stuff when he sold it to me. I found a radio for it from a friend of mine who took it out of his 99 ford ranger when he got a new one.
It fits in the dash great, so i assume it is the correct one. but the problem is is that there are places for two plugs to go into the radio, one skinny rectangular one, and one right next to it that is bigger and more square. the only plug and wire i can find anywhere on my truck is the smaller rectangular one.. It turns the radio on and all the lights work and it gets power, but only plays out of the speaker on the drivers door, and none of the other three. My question is does it have power problems going to the other speakers? or is my truck missing a plug or what is going on with this?
If anyone could help me that would be great.
Thanks
There should only be 1 plug if I'm not mistaken. Have you tried messing with the Balance and Fader controls on the radio? If those are centered then you might try swapping out the left speaker and the right speaker to see if the speakers are bad.
How many wires are in the plug coming out of the dash into the radio?
There are going to be at least two plugs. The longer/flatter one is the chassis plug and the squarer one is for an external changer. I believe all of the radios had the changer plug regardless of it was made to work.
If the previous owner had an amp hooked up to the speakers, I wouldn't expect the speakers to be directly connected to the radio. To get a good figure on what is going on with them, you need to see if he ran new wires through the door frame or used the existing wiring. If it's the existing wiring, then you can trace where the wires were cut to go to and from the amp and splice them back together.
ReAX: i looked quickly this morning and i did notice that there are extra wires in the back where he had the amp and sub.. I do not know where he had them ran from but he might have done what you said. he had an aftermarket radio in it though and it definately looks like he was only using one plug. he had the adapter on the main plug originally in the truck and the aftermarket extention plug had a lot of taped off wires on it and only one plug going into the other radio
