Steering gear adjustment
If you're reading this you probably have steering issues. I do and so do many others on this site. There are a lot of threads on here on that subject and often someone will say just tighten the adjustment. well, after a lot of research and some trial and error I have learned a couple things and thought I would share them here.I am attaching the instructions on how to adjust the steering gear. These are out of the ford service manual and I got them several years ago from someone on FTE, but I've forgotten who. Before you start this procedure disconnect the battery(s) and remove the airbag. Remove the two plugs on the dash side of the steering wheel and take out the two 8MM bolts. Remove the two wire connectors and set the airbag somewhere out of the way. Then follow the procedures below except you don't need to remove the fan shroud, there's enough room.
you might note that contrary to the popular opinion you do not tighten the screw to take slack out of the steering, you turn it counter clockwise, which most folks would call loosening it. I did it yesterday for the third time with a good bit of success. It helped a lot. It also helped a lot the first time I did it with my old steering gear. the second time it didn't help much but I think at that point the old gear was toast. I hope this helps someone, it did me.
