If you want the most from 87 octane, then you need aussie heads or aluminum, and pistons that are designed to work with the closed chamber heads.
9.5:1 compression with 87 octane and 360hp is achievable without breaking the bank.
What you will be doing with the motor will make a big difference. Racing? Towing?
The average rebuild on a 400 will net you .8hp for every cubic inch (320hp). This is a basic rebuild with a flat lifters and stock heads.
Roller cam, closed chamber heads, & the right pistons can get you up to 380hp on 87 octane. These are numbers from motor for a Bronco that never sees 5000 RPM. If you are looking for high RPM applications I am sure you could push 420hp with the right cam, but I have never built a motor like that so I have not experience.
