Before I took the old cab off my '77 F150 the Shift **** would just about touch the right hand radio **** when in 1st gear. If you pushed up enough would actually touch it. So I am now in the process of putting the new cab on the truck and I'm wondering how others shift levers sit in relation to the dash in 1st and the seat in Reverse (seat all the way back). Everything is bolted tight with the motor/trans. So I think if it is still that close to the dash I'm going to heat up the lever and "modify" the bend in it.

mine gets close. i'd have to measure, i'd guess 2-4 inches. it's so rare that I use 1st I never notice it.
So do you just start out in 2nd all the time? What gears are you running? Never tried starting in 2nd. I have 3.50's and only drove it a few days before tearing it apart.
not sure what gears. I'd guess 3.50-3.73? Running 300-6 four speed 4wd. 1st gear is not sychronized, so yeah I always just use 2nd. Hell, I can let the clutch out and not even use the gas practically. Takes off in second with ease. use 1st only if starting out with very heavy load. Or if im just creeping down a praire road or something. My truck will drive around all day long in second at idle.
if the shifter is that close,it usually means the cab is sagging due to the front cab mounts are gone. the cab mounts rot away, the cab sags, the shifter stays put,but now it sits higher in relation to the dash.so it comes closer to the dash in first. so make sure the new cab has rel good cab mounts before you install it. i have had this happen in a few old trucks before.
