300-6

Iwas wondering if there would be any benefit to putting a carburated 300-6 in my 78 F-150 4x4? Such as better gas mileage more torque. I use it for hunting and off road so speed isn't an issue.

the 300 Inline 6 is an excellent engine. I have one in my truck and it's never failed me. you sure won't beat someone at the stop light, but it's got pretty good power. if you want more info about it go to the inline 6 forum. www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum52

I'd put one in, definitely.

For low-end torque and MPG.

I knew a guy with a '72, got 19 mpg on the highway. It was 2wd, but still, you couldn't beat that with a brand new pickup!

First I worked in Phoenix Arizona back in 1987 as a wrecker driver . With that said we used the F- 350 trucks with Eagle Claws , A Wrecker parts company that manufactured a unique wheel lift ) and personally aside from the fact that it was a very slow to speed truck , it ran well. Now bear in mind we also had Manual or Heavy duty Ford manufactured gearboxes . I certainly wouldn't recomend ANY FORD AUTOMATIC to do this work , first they wont hold up. Secondly stay away from the newer stuff that was used from 1990 on as they used a three piece clutch and they were in my repair area too much too. Look I have seen Clifford Engineering sell some gteat stuff for the 240-300 inlines over the years . You can do a lot with their four barrel intake except use it in a Ford Van, it wont fit them . 1976-1998 Uh get back to me if you need more help . Ed Shaver

One of the best motors Ford ever rolled off the assembly line, it's not uncommon for the 300-6 to go 300,000 miles plus before a rebuild (with proper maintenance of course) only a diesel could challenge those kinda numbers.

I second montana highboys sentiments. Best motor Ford ever built, in my opinion. I would look for a pre 1986(pre-computers) engine. Lots of parts choices and the best torque per ci anywhere...

Then I'd say go for it.
The I-6, by design, is a smooth strong motor.

When I set out shopping for my truck, my goal was to find an I-6.
I happened to find one with a cool truck wrapped around it!

blockheadbob, I noticed you're up in the panhandle... If you want to take a little road-trip down to the Idaho Falls/Pocatello area, I've got a 300-6 in running condition I'll let you take off my hands cheaply. It's old, tired, and needs a bit of work as it's been sitting for a few years and oh, it's in a '78 Econoline van sitting in my driveway ...

Just thought I'd throw it out there...
