I have a 2003 Ford Expedition 4x4 with tow group, 5.4 L and 3:73. Basically the owners maual says I am good to tow 8650 lbs and a 895 max. tongue wt.
That said, the Ford hitch has had it's rating label fall off over the years so when I bought it, it was already gone. Does anybody here have an 2003 Expy with the Ford rating label still readable on thier hitch? If so, what does it say as far as weight carrying and weight distribution ratings?
No worries there. Currently using Equal-i-zer weight distribution hitch with integrated 4-point sway control. Hitch rated for 12000 lb trailer weight and 1200 lb tongue weight. Regardless of those numbers, I need to know what the limits are of the Ford class III hitch itself. My trailer weighs approx. 6500 lbs with a tongue weight approx. 850 lbs using weight distribution of course.
OK I'm hoping to breath some life back into this thread as I'm still looking to understand.
My '03 Expediton is rated at 8650 lbs. tow limit and 895 lbs. tongue weight which happens to be exactly 10% of the Expedition's maximum tow limit of 8950 lbs. (2WD). What I have tried to understand is how Ford comes up with these numbers - which you'll see above often seems to be 10% of the max. trailer wt. 10% also just happens to be what's considered the minimum tongue weight required to tow a trailer and reduce the likelyhood of sway problems i.e. too light a tongue, more likely to have sway issues.
SOOOOOOO, Curt Hitches makes the only aftermarket class III hitch for the 03 Expedition (that I can find) and it's rated at 10000 lbs. max. trailer weight and 1000 lbs. tongue weight.
My question.........is the 895 posted by Ford a limitation of the hitch i.e. installing the Curt gets me up to 1000 lbs. tongue wt? Or is the 895 lbs. a limt of the rear suspension etc. in which case the Curt hitch solves nothing.
The reason I ask is I tow a travel trailer of weighing around 6600 lbs. I have purchased a Hensley Arrow hitch which is considered by many to be the best and most advanced sway control system on the market. Trailer Sway Elimination Guaranteed - Hensley® the ONLY trailer hitch guaranteed to totally eliminate trailer sway. . However the Arrow adds quite a bit of tongue weight. So although I am maximizing my sway control, I may be approaching the 895 lbs. which is why I am considering the Curt hitch.
Simply put is the 895 hitch or Expy? Ask Ford and nobody gives you a straigh answer.
