1. Can an aftermarket posi be easily added to a non-posi rear or should I buy a posi pot right away?
2. Are all 80 up 9" rears 31 spline? I've read that on 79 under that 4WD was 31 spline and 2WD was 28 spline. Is there a way to tell without opening it up?
I'm looking at buying a 9" with 3:50 gears from an 81 pickup for my 79 F150.
the 31 spline 9 inch center section looks more beefy then the 28 spline. and i think the way the axle tubes are mounted into the center section is also different.

I am glad you could find a 3.50 nine inch. I tried for a long time but had to eventually rebuild mine. They seem to be found on four wheel drive trucks and seem to be scarce to find in junkyards, or at least that was my experience. Mine is still being set up at the shop and hope to get it back in my 74 F100. Good luck. I found that I could rebuild mine with new ring and pinion for less money than I could buy a rear in that might be as worn out as the one I had, if I could have found one.
We will see if it works as good as new when I bolt it in.
Actually I haven't found one to buy yet. I thought I found one at a wreckers yesterday afternoon, but then I talked to the guy and he said it was shot. So I'm still busy hunting for one. If anyone knows of one in SW Ontario please let me know.
Onthe 9 inch topic, I just picked mine up formthe guy setting it up after a new ring and pinion gear. I really was not aware how mechanics priced the set up for them. Mine charged $135.00 with no guarentee and $200. with. I had to choose the lesser amount and take my chances. I had not expected hardly that much, but I don't know what the going rate is, so I don't know if I came out bad or good. I ended up with a little over $400.00 by the time I bought everything to go in it and have it put together. But.... I have to look at it like I coulnd't go out and buy a fresh Nod 9 inch for $400.! Good luck on your quest.:-(
