Front Driveshaft

I was changing my U-joints front and rear shafts, my front one has this knuckle not exactly sure what it is but this is what I am going to call it, has two u-joints about 5-6 inches apart and it has a spring joint or something in the middle of the two, when I got the joint apart this piece was in pieces and the ball end of things is pretty beat up is this something that can be repaired at a shop or am I going to have to replace the whole thing, I will be contacting some shops tomorrow but would like a heads up to know if they are going to try and cheat me.

Bump-I'd like to know this too. Took apart my front driveshaft. Going to have to have fleet-pride replace that joint with the spring. What exactly is that called?

Thanks

it is called a constant velocity joint, or CV joint. They let your drive-shaft operate at a steeper angle with less stress on your drive line than a single u-joint can. You can do them your self but it is much better to let a drive-shaft shop do it for you and check and rebalance the shaft for you.

The two of you are pretty much right, but I think there is a g in cardigan joint. It's also considered a CV joint. CV joints change the type of angle the two yoke ends require, I think it's parallel for CV/doubles as a opposed to complimentary for a single ujoint on each end.

It's a Cardan shaft, a way of setting up u-joints called a 'constant velocity' joint because of lots of physics stuff I don't want to retype, so read this stuff:
Constant-velocity joint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Universal joint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A "CV joint" on a truck usually refers to the ball and socket type joint found on IFS trucks, which are used because they can work at more radical angles than traditional u-joints.

you say tomato I say tamaato. You guys are correct, it is a Cardan shaft Constant Velocityjoint. Many of us have called them CV joints for many years. We used that term back when VW's, Corvairs and a few other foreign jobs were about the only ones to use CV joints like the IFS trucks do now. It won't matter when you go to get parts because most parts men will know what you are talking about. A drive line shop will know the minute that you toss that puppy on the counter what you need.
