I have a f250 lariat supercrew 4x4 v10. i bought this truck aboout 3 months ago and i at first thought the noisse was from the flowmaster and dual exhaust. That wasnt the case. I have since replaced the flowmaster with a stock muffler and the sound was still there. The truck sounds great when i first start out in the morning and then i hit about 45mph it sounds like the bottom is falling out!!! I put the rear of the truck on jack stands this morning and put it in drive. i could still hear the noise but it was not as loud and i could not pin point it. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!! THANKS.
The first thing I think of is bearings. Do you have fluid leaking from the pinion seal, wheels seals or cover seal? If so it could be the diff oil is low and the bearings got dry since they are lubed by the diff oil. Check the level in the diff and see if it's low. If it is then this is probably your source of the problem.
Others will come along with other ideas I'm sure but at least I'm good for a bump.
I checked diff fluid level and it looked good. Where the pinion seal is there looks like there was a leak at some time but there is no "wet" fluid on there now. When i bought this truck the noise was prevelent then. So im sure it may have been doing this for some time now. How hard is it to replace pinion seal and bearing? Any special tools needed? A friend of mine thinks this could be the problem as well. I had a wheal bearing go out in a dodge truck i had before and the roaring sound sounds similar to that.
Carrier bearings and axle bearings have a dull roar. If your pinion flange is tight, spins nice, and doesn't leak, it's probably OK. Gears whine until you let off on the gas.

A leaking pinion seal is an indication of a bad bearing but you say it is not leaking? Remove the driveshaft and check for looseness or gritty feel to spin. Grab it after a drive and check for heat also. If a pinion seal leaks, many times it is because of the loose gear shaft flange action upon it, indicating a bad bearing.
