so i've had a sqeek since i bought the truck from a dealer in late march. today we had record breaking heat..around 73* which is warm for may..anyway the truck was parked with the pass side facing the sun. i jumped in go grab a drink well doing yard work and i heard a funny noise..i looked back and the right rear quarter was hanging by the very small rear mount!!! i flipped out lol but i grabed some ductape and got it back in place...thank god it came with a 60 month/3,000mile bumper to bumper warrnety thank god...
so into the dealer it goes monday morning! i'm just glad it didnt fall and break. as far as i can tell this is a TERRIBLE way to mount a window(glue) and is it possible to replace it with the fixed window? and is this a common problem?
Hmm, I haven't heard of others having this problem. Most just have a problem of it sticking or operating slowly. I am a glass installer, but never really paid attention to how they are mounted on the front of that vent, and will have to look at it tomorrow and see. The dealer will most likely sub it out to a glass shop in the area, and hopefully they fix it properly for ya. I have owned for just over a year now and use the back vents often, and no problems yet. Knock on wood.
I haven't seen one that is a fixed window in the X before, but they are either a gasket or also a glue in.(but that glue(urathane) should never let go, the windshield is also mounted the same way)
I looked at the vent window today and it looks like an epoxy that is used to secure the glass to the metal bracket that bends in and out some when the window moves. Might have been a bad bond to the glass, because the heat shouldn't have any bearing on the glue, unless something different was used on yours.
I do agree tho, kinda a silly way to attach the glass on, without any holes or wrap arounds on the edge of the glass.
i found glass under the rear carpet on that side, i'm guessing its not the stock window on that side..thus sub-par mouting was done..ugh
so i have to get up extra early tomarrow, drop it off and get back home and grab my other truck in time to make it to work on time at 8am..that should be fun.
i thought i'd read about others with the same issue, maybe not...but they better replace the whole window because a far as i can tell it would come as a unit new..the window with the mounts installed.
It is hard to tell without taking the interior moulding off to see exactly, but most of the ones I have ever worked on, on other vehicles the metal bracket that is glued to the glass gets bolted on to the pillar. I would not think it likely that they would replace the whole pc of glass, but rather reglue, but you might want to question them on that. I good prep on the glass and an epoxy would hold that glass in place, but most don't prep the glass properly or use the proper epoxy and then there are problems down the road, as you are discovering. Hope it works out for ya.
Don't feel bad, 70mph on a 97 degree day melted the adhesive on my 22 year old sunroof. It totally seperated and slammed back on the cab and shattered. I'm just glad it didn't completely come off and hit someone behind me.
oh man, yeah i'm thankful that it didnt fall well i was dirving..i know one bump and it would have fell.
its at the dealer right now, they will be calling out a glass shop to some out and see what they need to do..they dont open till 9am tho(glass shop) so i'll have some waiting to do but thats ok..atleast its getting fixed.
i'll update when i know more, i really hope they fix it right.
I think the epoxy kit is like $50 and a good body shop or a auto glass shop can do this, a good body shop would remove this to do paint on the rear quarters.
so its still down at the dealer... when i dropped it off i also mentioned a slight clunk over bumps..well they have been working on that for the last 2 days. they replaced a buch of **** and its nice and tight but still making noise sooo if they cant get it fixed they will be sending it to the local ford dealer..sincer i bought it at a chevy dealer.
the windows should be fixed tomarrow, the glass place they sub'd it out to is coming in the morning.
update as i hear...i had to put insurance back on my explorer so i had somthing to drive..my f-250 cant be driven on the road right now because i havent removed the studded tires yet lol
When it gets to that point, do not give them any suggestion, just let them replace parts. That way atleast you get lots of stuff updated and replaced with new.
thats kinda what i was thinking, i gave them a suggestion of the sway bar bushings but they have replaced more then a few bushings and the steering dampener(sp) and its still there so i'll let them replace parts till its fixed lol
Subs in the back might of helped loosen the glue holding it on. Not sure what size you run and how loud you run them but that could cause a window to eventually break loose of the mounts if its just glued on there.
I had that same window fixed in soldotna at a dealer. Then on the way to anc a week later it fell off and shattered. After havin it fixed in ancorage no problems. I think if the tech does a good prep youll be fine, if not itll be a heaad ache.
