I know this an old question but I thought I had an open diff on my 03 6.0 2WD EX. So today I had the ex in the air and turned one of the rear wheels and the other turned in the same direction. I thought that this was the way a posi works. If the is true how can I confirm this

GM calls them PosiTraction. Do it again and grab the other wheel this time. I think it is shown on your door sticker or V.I.N. also. Maybe some else can confirm that.

CBradford beat me to the submit button.

Yep, common mistake frequently made. Should be referred to as limited slip diff.

Ford calls their limited slip diff TractionLok.

ok a little back ground i was looking at my 93 5.0 mustang which has track lock. both wheels moved in the same direction. i was confused and lifted the ex and it did the same. i though that if you turned one the other would go it the opposite direction.

ps the door code is C1 so that would be a limited slip 3.73 right ?

[quote=supr_sly;7455706] I thought that if you turned one the other would go it the opposite direction.

Not necessarily. It depends on the little friction left in the spider gears and where the friction is, and if it's in gear.. Grab one and turn the other.
You can't tell if it's LS or not by jacking it up etc, because you have to apply some power to the driveshaft for it to work. Go out to a gravel road or grass, stop, spin your tires, and go look at the tracks.

You are correct. Every open diff I have ever spun would spin the other in the opposite direction. It's an easy way to tell if it's open or if it has a LS or locker.

Not sure I support the "not necessarily" position.

If it's in gear one will spin in opposite direction. If not in gear one can spin by itself, one opposite, or both can spin unless you stop one. (Try it) I believe this is true for LS also as they need power applied to lock up, otherwise they would be hard to control on loose surfaces. They need to be tested in actual conditions.

Go give yoruself a lawn job, if you leave two tracks you have a trac-loc lol.

GM's G80 option is a locker that engages after a certein RPM difference between the two tries. So when in the air on a lift the tires will spin in opposite directions till a certain RPM.

Ford uses friction plates on the side of the spider gears so tehy should spin together when up on a lift unless the frictions are terribly worn out.

Heres an exploded view of ford's trac-lock system.

You might have a picture of a rear end but I don't think you know what you are talking about and you are very rude.
GM and Ford both have friction plates on both sides and both need power to activate. RPM's has nothing to do with it. This is why it takes a real world test to confirm their functionality. See those ramps on the spider cage? Do you know what they do?

I don't believe he was being rude. He was making a funny about tearing up your lawn, as someone said above to go into your grass, stop, and then try and spin the tires... (Didn't you even see his "lol"?)

Yes I even saw it because it was me. I was speaking of a grassy surface (did I say lawn) or other simi hard surface. Lol's are usually rude. I am in the country and there is a lot of grass and very little lawn.

1 is not trying to be rude he is just trying to make a point, a least that's the way I take it and sometimes reading on line/post's you could perceive it as rude.
