I also check out FTE Parts Guy (Ed) web site, and it looks like there is a guide also. My truck doesn't have the guide, is that what lets you use the hoist?
The answer to both of your questions is yes. The dealer ought to be able to get you a key from your vin if memory serves, but without the guide and jack handle you may want to head to the bone yard. What exactly are you missing?
By guide, are you talking about the tube the key and jack handle go through to hoist and lower the spare?
This is a good time for the newer PSD owners here to take inventory of their spare tire changing ability. If you don't have all the stuff you need or your winch is fubar, you will be stuck when you need your spare. Get out there and make sure you can take down the spare. Also, check the pressure and inspect it.
Well If I would known this yesterday I could have sent you the housing tube. I didn't know there was a key or whatever to get the spare down,I fiddled with it for about 30min. got pizzed at it,and then cut the cable. And let me tell you, when the spare drops,it hurts...lol
You may want to look at yours closely in light of this to make sure someone has not modified it due to a lost/missing key. Look to see if a socket extension or something will work it or at least make sure the keyed portion is still there.
Anyone got the link to the old spare tire key woe thread?

I did a search for the spare tire key thread and the results were ridiculous. I filtered what I could. Search function leaves a lot to be desired here. Big thumbs down FTE.
I mounted a backup camera in the hole where the tube used to be,because I didn't want to drill a hole in the bumper, plus the spare is a lot smaller than what I have on the truck. I have another tire/wheel I will put in the truck in case I need one. Just not under the truck. Anyone need a factory spare??
I found one thread that said something about poping the key off the hoist assembly. I also found where someone welded a socket on the end. I guess my three options are:
1. Go to dealer, get key.
2. Weld socket to assembly.
3. Keep spare in bed.
