I have aquired a 71 F250 with a 400M 4Spd - with a really low 1st.
Can anybody give me a general run down on this drivetrain?
What clutch would it use?
Is 4th gear 1:1?
Would this transmission and bellhousing bolt up to a 3.8L or 5.0L?

Not without more information. Is it 4wd? If not, it's probably a ford 9" rear end. If yes, It's probably a Dana 60 rear with either a Dana 44, D44HD, or D50 front axle. (I'm not 100% sure on these - someone correct me if I'm wrong)
>What clutch would it use?
Not sure on this, sorry.
>Is 4th gear 1:1?
More than likely, yes.

No, the 400 uses a big block bolt pattern not compatible with either engine.

What Bellhousing will bolt up to this gear box? Will a late model aluminum T5 BH work?
If you don't know, any suggestions on how to research this kind of thing?
Thanks
It is either a t-18 or an np435, both are four speed manuals with granny low first gears. The 4th gear is 1:1. You can get a bellhousing for the t-18 or np435 (depending on which one you have) from a truck that has a 300/302/351W and the t-18 or np435. The bolt patterns on the 300/302/351W are the same. For a pic and info to identify the trans go to http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/transmission_gateway.htm Good luck, I hear they are both great transmissions.
the 435 was bolted to 300 6's and 302's and 351's(w). you can get a small block bellhousing for it all the way up to 1987. this is the drivetrain i'm building into my rockcrawler. it's a bronco ll body with fullwidth solid axles. i have an 88 5.0 an old 435 and an adapter to a d20 t-case. i have a bell from an 86 f-150. i chose it because it has the bracket for my slave cylinder. not enuff room to build mechanical linkage .
1 bit of info i'm fighting at the moment. i had a 73 302 built up before i found the efi motor. i just dropped it in my 65 stepside. the 11"(i believe)clutch and pressure plate assembly rubs the newer bell a little. about 10 seconds with my 4" grinder cured it. i had assumed it would fit. the rubbing was minimal as well as the material removed from the bell.
