Howdy,
I've recently bought a parts truck that has a Perkins turbo diesel that I'm going to put in my '73 F250 4x4. The parts truck also has a five speed transmission that appears to be made by New Process (It has the 'NP' in the picture of a gear cast on the side, it's also painted orangish-red).
I was wondering if anybody knows anything about the five speed. Like the ratios, or if I can tell whether it's a five speed overdrive or not.
Here is the shift pattern:
Just a question. Did your shift pattern move on you? I've never seen a pattern with 2 slots to the right, both on top.
Could it be; 1 2 4 R
3 5
I'm curious, because I have one just like it, and I don't know where to find NP gear ratio info. Did it have a model # and if so where?
According to my Ford Parts man, it is a NP 542 FL. Mine is in a 1974 F600 behind a 361. Elliott
Judging by my results about the Tremec T-5 being in a truck in the 80-86 forum, hopefully my info is correct about this ( by the way I stuck my foot in mouth in that discussion ).
The last I knew the New Process Gear company did not manufacture a 5-speed for a light duty pick-up (F-350 and below). They may have built them for a special order for a heavier truck model. New Venture Gear absorbed NP and produced several 5-speeds placed in both GM and Chrysler products. I wonder if they left the NP stamp on a few early models and put them into Fords as well. I know of the NV 1500, 2550, 3500, and 4500 models. The 4500 was the most desireable 5-spd to have for 4 to 5 speed conversions until the ZF transmissions made a name for themselves.
Well, It's definitely not the stock transmission. I believe that the transmission and motor were installed in the truck in '72 or slightly later by the previous owner. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that is well before New Venture came into being. I have no idea where the previous owner got the transmission. I doubt if he even remembers.
I'm hoping i'll get a chance to drop the transmission tomorrow (the 29th). Then I can figure out if it's a direct or an overdrive, and hopefully find a serial number and date. I'll keep you guys posted.
I think I may have it narrowed down. I did some research on the 'net and found a few NP 5-spds from the 60's in IH and Dodge trucks. Try searching for "New Process" 5 speed transmissions. Just type it in the address bar if you have internet explorer 5 or better.
I dropped the tranny today. I found out that it's a 5 speed direct. I'm somewhat disappointed I must admit. I'll probably sell it and keep my 435. Does anyone have any idea what it's worth? I believe these are the ratios:
If the 5sp is bolted up to the Perkins, I'd sure keep it. That 1.22 4th gear would be real nice on a hill. It would let you drop only about 500 RPM before you could shift. It would be wonderful if you tow also. I have an E4OD in my tow rig. 3k is 65 MPH in 3rd, 3k is 45 MPH in 2nd. Elliott
Elliot,
Your probably right. The perkins would probably like those close shift points. I'd better look into an aftermarket overdrive though. With 4.10s and 35s I'm gonna have to cruise on the highway at about 45MPH to keep the motor in it's economy range. I can live with that for a while since this is not my daily driver, but eventually I want to be able to cruise at at least 60 MPH at 1800RPM.
You got any hookups on a brownie gearbox? :->
Thanks for all the help, fellas. I really appreciate it.
Take alook at the Gear Vendors OD unit----it looks to be the best unit on the market currently and is supposed to be built very tough----I was going to do the zf5 speed thing but I think that (when) I get the moola I'll just keep my np435 and add the GV unit too my tranny--- the're about 2700 currently----fd
Phill. From what I've been able to gather (info) Brownee's are just about impossible to find parts for. My Brownee is 2/1, 1/1, .80/1. If you can find a spicer 6041, you get 2.25/1, 1.24/1, 1/1, & .80/1 .There is a guy down a little N of Houston that has your basic set up. Let me see if I can find his info. Elliott
