I was curious to see if the 4R70W will be a direct replacement in my Explorer. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Oh, it is a '96 Eddie Bauer 4.0 if that helps any!
I don't think it's going to fit behind a 4.0, nor would you want it to. The stock tranny (4R55E or 5R55E I'm not sure which they used in 96) is a much better box
Bringing back up an old topic, but what's everyone's take on this? Is are the 4- and 5-speed trannies behind the 4.0 really that much better than the 4R70W?
I'm looking into getting an explorer, and if I have to drive an automatic, I want it to last.
if you are buying a 4.0 you will ONLY get a 4r55e/5r55e depending on the year of explorer. If you want a 4R70W you will HAVE to buy an explorer with the 5.0/4.6 V-8. My choice of course would be the 5.0/4R70W combo.
You guys say that the 4r70w is just in the Ford truck. i got one in my 96 t-bird and i blew the motor. It was a 3.8L. I was hopin that the 4r70w would bolt right up to it but i dont know if it will cuz it was bolted up to a V6.
A 4R70W will not bolt to a 4.0L. It doesn't matter if the 4R70W is from a V6, the 4.0L has a different bolt pattern than the 3.8L.
And even if you could bolt it up, where would you find a computer to run it? The computer in the TBird won't run a 4.0L engine, and the computer in the Explorer won't run a 4R70W transmission.
Somethings are easy, some difficult, and some impossible. This one is impossible.
sorry i didnt make my self clear on what i wanted to bolt the 4r70w up to i want to bolt it up to a 5.0. I got the Computor and wiring harness. I see all of these guys do engine swaps and they never say if they change the tranny. isnt that possible to run the same v6 tranny?
