A bad ring isn't going to cause you to lose coolant. Did the truck overheat? The OHV 4.0 is very prone to cracked heads if it overheats.

A leaky head gasket can lose coolant....and a sweet smell in the exhaust as well as some extra steam. Coolant for the rings is not good.

If the CEL was showing codes P0171,174 that could mean bad upper intake manifold gaskets....they're more like rubber o-rings....causes a vacuum leak and lean condition from the computer.

Injectors might just be jacking up your bill.

well what happened is that the fuel injectors he replaced cause he said that was the problem to burn one of the rings out in the cylenders. it did have that sweet smell to so it did have a blown head gasket cause i did see the dryed white water marks on the block. the heads tested out fine no cracks which i was suprised cause its a commen issue. i just love the beast its taken me anywhere i wanted to go when it was unning like this for almost a yr and i decided to park it till i can afford to fix it. i dont care what people say about my explorer. thanks

you know suprising the way it ran my cel light never came on. the only time it came on is when i ran out of gas one time and thats because it was bearly running. but that aint good thats probably why my injectors took a crap. i dont have a working gas gauge so im keeping an eye when i reset the mileage. thanks
