OK I have the tranny out of the truck and am looking at the up pipes. The joint where they connect to the headers (both of them) are black and have a heavy build up of soot. What is this connection? justa flange bolted together or is there a gasket? I'm thinking that now is the time to replace them since I have access--I just need to know with what.
the upgraded ones are much better there is a place online to get the bellows and flanges to make some updated pipes for less than a hundred if you can weld or know someone that can
If they are black by the exhaust manifolds I would replace the pipes. There is no donut gasket there just pipes clamped to the manifold.
If it is leaking up by the collector where they go into the turbo you may be able to just put new donut gaskets in there if the pipe is not scored or damaged.
The bellowed uppipes are a definate upgrade but donut gaskets are like only $22.
Definately fix this while the tranny is out, It would be a real pain if the tranny were in.

probly a stupid question. how much of a pain? really dont want to pull my tranny for the h2e.
has anyone tried?
when neal was up at the house we were talkin about his set up and he said definately pull the tranny, i guess spend two hours pulling the tranny, save a few or more by ease of access.
I know of guys that couldn't even get those dang pipes off with the trans out of the way...
If you're just going to replace them anyway (which sounds like you should if they are leaking) then just cut the suckers off however you can get to them...
OK i am looking around and have a few ?'s. How big of an improvement are the bellowed uppies? My plans are stage 1's adreneline Hpop and a d66 w/1.0 housing. Off TJ's part list I have these..

(Napa) F17250. Up-pipe donuts for Small Block Chevy V8
whats up with the chevy small block donuts? THe uppies at black cloud diesel are around 500 wich is more than I want to spend right now but are they worth it with what i want to do with the truck?
if you jsut replace the donuts it works well the SLIGHTLY swell the pipes to make the dontuts tighter the 2-1/16 sb chevy donuts i dont think are any better than the ford ones.
the bellows pipes are definately a whole lot better especially for a modded truck that will see higher drive pressures ive built one set for less than $100 yeah and the ih ones and DI's are close to $500
OK heres cheap for you. What if I pull the pipes clean them up and then make a copper gasket for the bottom joint. From what I can see in the manual the uppies fit inside the manifold and then the bolts pull the flange tight to it. the copper should distort enough to make up any room. Good Idea --Bad Idea--really dumb idea??
All thoughts appreciated.
(would love to just get the bellowed uppies but I just spent 3600 on a new tranny from racerx and I have a wife........)
Replacing the up-pipes does not require you to remove the tranny. However, it will make the process a lot easier.
I removed uppies with the tranny in and had some difficulty, but nothing that would have made it impossible. When I figured out how I was going to run my piping for my holset I just plasma torched the pipes and pulled them out.
The up-pipes fit on the outside of the manifold flange, but inside the clamps.
I have pretty good access to tools and a nice oil pit, so working from the concrete may make things a little tricky.
