I am changing the grime out of my truck fellas and for those that dont know it, its a 7.3/6.9 diesel. I put both because aside from the bolts having seperate washers that is really the only proof of it being a 6.9. Whish by the way i do trust, just i am always surprised by this beast!
Either way, i was hunting some recommendations on oil. Also does anyone use additives like Lucas Oil products? With the morning smoke i was wondering if i threw in some additive if it would help with this. Thoughts???
Josh
One thing I like is to throw in about a qt. of ATF and run the engine up to temperature for about half hour before drainning the old oil.
I use Mobil Delvac 15W40 in my 6.9 with no additive.
However I do use Lucas stabilizer in some machinery engines and really like it.
call me crazy but safe or no? I am not second guessing you but those are two different liquids on one hand and then ATF has a lot of different chemicals in it. I have heard that you can use ATF in a diesel engine to clean and lube the system but i just dont trust that aspect.
It works pretty good, but people have their different opinions about cleaners....
Some say it just knocks stuff loose, that then gets run through the system.
Others say it
I've done it for years, I've also drained the oil and replaced it with Diesel and let it run gently for a while and then drained and flushed it all out. But I think I would rethink that in my old age!
Wreckingball, if you use a good detergent motor oil and change it like you should, you don't need any "cleaners." If you want to "clean" the engine up a bit internally, shorten the OCI (oil change interval) for a few changes and good oil will do a pretty good job. You don't want it coming loose all of a sudden. Whatever the oil won't dissolve is better left alone until you tear the engine down and melt off in the hot tank.
I agree, Festus, about changing your mind about the diesel in the crankcase. Do that too many times and you'll be back riding that old Mule, Ruth.
good points about the OCI, but i just wanted to see about getting a fresher start than i found it! know what i mean? just want to get to a point better than i found it!
