Which water pump?

I am running a stock 292 in my '59 F-100. The water pump needs replacement. Napa and AutoZone list two replacement pumps - one with a 3/4" shaft and one with a 5/8" shaft. Which is the correct application? Or are they interchangeable?

Also, I have never swapped out a water pump before. It would seem to be a pretty straightforward operation, but are there any tricky aspects to the job I should be aware of? What is best gasket sealer to use?

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom you can offer.

That tells me that you are to re use your pulley. Measure your pulleys shaft to acertain the size.

I use permatex "gold" on engines. The blue will also work if you want to save 50 cents.
Make sure everything is clean and dry. set the gasket with a thin butter of permatex, install, torque slightly. Let it set overnight! Fill the coolant and run.
Never done one on my Y block but done plenty of water pumps. No leaks yet using this method.

I found somewhere some info that said the 3/4" was a truck application, 5/8" is for the cars.

Now that doesn't mean that you don't have a car one in the truck or vice-versa, but it seemed to work when I replaced mine.

Here are the gotchas I found:

There are two openings on the water pump. You need one for the heater, and the other needs to be plugged. I was able to get the plug at the parts store, but wound up using a piece of pipe for the water line. I am gonna try and hunt a hardware store to find something a bit more appropriate later. My original one was corroded and pretty well rust welded to the housing. Plus what was left of it was not really worth saving. And there is a hose that comes off the back of the water pump that goes into the block. You should go ahead and replace this while you are in it. It appears to be a much easier job when you already have the pump off than it would be otherwise.

Other than that, don't lose the bolts and try to remember ho0w it came apart. Good luck!
