What kind of reader you need depends entirely upon how serious you are about doing your own work. Also how many vehicles you have that you would like to read should be considered. If all you want is to read codes, any basis OBD-II reader will get the job done. As the price goes up, so do the features. More expensive models can read the freeze frame data, and pull trans codes and stuff (on CAN equipped models). Then you can get into scanners which can readout live sensor data and look at fuel trims and graph the readouts.
