Ok, I've read a lot of people asking about taking off their smog pump. I will do this TODAY and report back if I can even tell a difference if everyone seems to know this is an ok thing to do. I live in a state that does not check emissions.
I haven't looked in that area of my truck for awhile, but I think I can just take the belt off the pump and all will be well. Is there anything that can happen to my truck from doing this?
Well, I just took the belt off and went around driving. I don't really know if I can tell much difference from just normal driving, but I swear... This thing is burning out much easier from a very low roll in 2nd gear (NP435). Before it'd usually just go, or maybe barely make a little screech and then go, but this time, it would just start to light them (or it) up. It has never done this, and this is the exact same spot I always do this.
I am the last person who wants to think I gained performance if I really didn't, and like I said, I don't know if it has done anything while driving normally. If it did do something, it was just enough to help the tire get moving that little bit quicker to let it start burning out from a low speed punch. Every little thing helps the 302 in the 1200RPM area, lol.
I will say, it definitely feels like it's just easier to get the tires spinning.
All I did was take the belt off. The main thing I would like to know is if there are any side effects that can happen to my truck from this?
I dont know if you get any more performance with out it or not . I dont have one .You dont need it..I would just take the pump off . Looks better saves weight .. Lew
Its not gonna hurt your truck at all. The only thing that taking if off is going to do to your truck is give it one less pulley for your motor to spin.
if it was like my truck...14 less vacuum lines to leak, 4 check valves, 38 vacuum connector problems, etc...
hey is there a way to remove the egr spacer and put a normal carb spacer in? waht vehicles did the normal spacer some in? or do you need a pre smog intake?
I have been told that they only way to completely get rid of the emissions stuff is to go presmog. I plan on getting an new intake that has no smog or egr stuff on it at all.
i made an EGR block off plate, and capped the other port (couldnt get the thing out of the spacer to plug it), i dont have any o2 sensors, so the only thing left is the cat and the egr tube from the exhaust manifold to the egr spacer.

I found that my air pump wasn't connected to anthing and next week I am going to take it off. In the mean time I have been trying to tid y up all those stinkin hoses.
I think in the attached picture you can see my carb spacer...let me know if you find a way to reduce the number of hoses.
I took the belt off my smog pumps(yes pumps, my truck has 2 of them) 4 years ago and haven't had a problem. My new motor wont have any though. I will save all the crap just in case they do require smogging someday.
