I got my 88Ranger 4x4 2.9l back from the local back-yard mechanic. I asked him to change the driver's side U-Joint and a central front U-Joint, and do a lube job. He had my truck all day and claims it took six hours to do all the work, although he charged me for five. (His rates are $35/hour Can.) He says there was so much rust it took a while to get the parts separated. Is this realistic or is he an incredibly inept mechanic? Does anyone know the Blue Book (Canadian) time figures for the worst case scenario for this job? (Six months ago, a $65/hour mechanic charged me for 2.7 hours to change the ball joints, and U-Joint on the Right Hand side.)
Thanks!
Replacing the u-joints on TTB is not the easiest tasks, it will take a couple hours with the right tools to do all 3. That mechanic is prolly a bit "slow" for it to have taken 6 hours. I replaced the hub bearings in my TTB D44, 15 mins to pull a manual hub apart and the spindle nuts, takes a bit of finness to the the hub off the spindle tho, no more that 40 mins each side to pull everything apart.
Rust can really slow down a u-joint replacement job and on a TTb front end it can become time consumeing cuz you have to pull the axle shaft from the dif. he might have just taken his time to make sure he got everything done right.
