I went to a 4bbl because the RFGas they sell here runs through a stocker 2bbl like water, fouls plugs in weeks, stinks, huge hydrocarbon emissions, and I can't get small jets for a fomoco carb. Edelbrock carbs are easier to tune than the holley 0-8007 360 cfm, but the mainshaft locked wide open on my edelbrock carb at 5 years, the shaft hole is worn out, no more edelbrock carbs for me.

A Carb shop should be able to provide or install new bushings

I would try a $99 edelbrock performer intake, though, my weiand does not allow the 255 to fire on two cylinders cold unless the vacuum secondaries open up. (Which proves no electrical problem).

The edelbrock Air Gap manifolds run a good as the ol Torkers in the 60's/70's without having to spend as much time tuning

That is why my winter milage is only 14 on a lot of short trips. 1980 granada electronic ignition with .060 plug gap did not help the idle miss. I've got a 70's 302 with edelbrock performer intake and cam and carb in a fairlane, it idles a lot better than the 255.
All the questions you have- Call HTC as they have built at least 1,000 of those 255's/260/289/302 and can also tell you all about the power comparisons.

With regards to the Northern Kits & Scat, Eagle etc I would avoid them like the black plague! Unless you are a pro racer and they are building specific parts for you, what you get is CHINESE JUNK- additionally, both SCAT & Eagle have been around only a fraction of what HTC has and until just a few years ago, they were primarily VW bug engine "specialists".

The cost is all the same depending on who you go with- you just have to decide-

1. Do I want US made parts or harbor freight specials

2. Do i trust my $ to people who have been building engines for 45 years or those who played with VW bugs and then started playing with V8's- and we'ren't even born yet when your engine was made!

i'll rest my rant.

indianajo you can probably port the heads on that motor to gasket match and get those two cylinders working again. you know i was thinking aboubt seing how hard it would be to get a 302 intake to work on my 255 but i didnt want to spend that much time and money on something that might not work.

Can I order a set of hens' teeth here? The 255 was FoMoCos attempt to save gas with a v8 engine. We replaced a tired 302 in my Dads Monarch with a 255 from a Capri, if memory still works. The thing wanted to jump out of the car when we fired it up. The flex plate from the 302 was not going to work. That meant also changing the C4, as the diameter was different. We lucked out, as we found a C4 with the larger bell housing.
To find performance parts for a non-performance engine, by DESIGN, is like seeking hens teeth or going on a snipe hunt.
If you want performance at an affordable price, you would be well advised to let the 255 alone. It worked for the remainder of the Monarchs life until it was destroyed while parked, but it was not a performance engine.
Sows ear, meet silk purse. Got any money?? We'll take all you want to give. Interesting from a uniqueness viewpoint, but not a good investment, IMO.
