I finally got to test out some new mods (3" down pipe to 3.5", cat delete, 140v IDM, 22k Mod).
I towed my almost 14k 5th wheel trailer about 65 mile to seasonal resort last week. I have towed it before but with only the intake mod. I did notice quite a bit of difference in power. After towing about 5 miles we came to a real steep grade hill for about 1 mile I was pleased with power gains, about half way up in 3rd gear I noticed a lot of black smoke from the original tail pipe and then the cel came on (scared me for awhile) engine temp was up a little maybe to the R. (the cel reset when I shut her down) and has stayed off.
The truck really runs and starts well, a little more gray blue smoke than I would like on start up during colder weather though.
These mods have really woke up this old truck, Its a lot more responsive and fun to drive when not towing.
Sooooo am I over due for my next mod EGT gauge? At this point I only tow the 5er twice a year, up to the lake and back home in the fall, also tow a 20' boat, but thats an easy tow.
Most say that gauges should be your first mod, but i don't have any yet, your check engine light was probably set by a lack of HPO caused primarily by your 22k mod. Do you like the 140v IDM? I have the resistor, but haven't found the time to do the swap.
I can't wait to do my first pull tomorrow afternoow. I need to go haul some furniture in my 32 foot enclosed triple axle bumper trailer. The last time I pulled it it was bone stock. Now I have the mods listed below and it feels a lot better solo so I can't wait till the trailer is on.
I pull a 5er about like you and the EGT gauge tells me what to do with my right foot. I lay it on 1,200*, ease off according or apply according. On the mountain grades I watch it more then any other gauge I have and I have seven guages. Oil pressure, coolant temp, boost, trans temp, oil temp and fuel pressure. EGT gauge is the most important. If I have it on cruise and not paying attention I can go up to 14 or 15 in a heart beat. Be carefull!!

I like the 140v IDM mod its a fine compliment to the rest, the idle is smooth, also have quicker consistent starts. I think its a good mod to do during the cold winter months, because you can take it inside and take your time with it. It's really an easy mod, and especially if you have had some electronic soldering experience.
I do kind of wish I would have got the gauges first, then I would have been able to monitor the improvements.
I have some soldering experience, but I'd rather spend $700 on something else than replacing a IDM that I ruined, that is why I have been hesitant to do it. But lately I have been thinkin about putting in again.

You could always get one from Bean's that's already modded for $100...
I like to do my own work, that way i know what has been done and how it has been done, and plus i get to keep my money that way. Its a gamble and maybe a stupid one becuase if i 'win the bet' i am $100 ahead, but if i 'lose the bet' then i'm out $700.
