I recently bought a 96 F-250 PSD with 143k miles. The tranny has never been serviced, so I suspect it’s about due.
Lately, I have noticed that when I step on the gas from a standstill, it takes a long time for the tranny to shift into 1st gear. It's like when you’re driving a stick and you rev the engine to 2000 RPM and then very slooooowly let the clutch out. This only happens when shifting into 1st gear from a dead standstill. It also only happens when the tranny is warm. When it’s cold, it shifts normal.
I was thinking torque converter, because the transmission shifts nice and smooth otherwise. Any ideas?
It's probably not the torque converter. A torque converter usually works or doesn't work.
How is the fluid? Is it full? Burnt? Bad fluid or low fluid can cause these symptoms. So can low line pressure, which means something isn't right inside.
If the fluid is full and red, you need a shop manual to do the diagnostics. Pay special attention to the part about checking line pressure.
