[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 03:00 PM (EST)]Hi everyone,
I just recently brought down my Transmission in order to change the rear main seal and oil pan gasket. We put the Tranny back up, changed the front and rear seal on it, changed the tranny pan gasket along with the filter, and replaced the fluid in it including the torque converter. Also replaced the Tranny mount.
When I engage the Tranny to "D" and take off from a stand still position I hear a clunk as if something was loose, any suggestions of what to check?
Does this truck have a "yoke" or "slip yoke"?????
It goes directly in the transfercase from the drive shaft. Mine went out several times in six years because of a out of balanced drive shaft. Each time it went out it made a "cluck" noise at take off. Like the rearend was loose or something.
Check the flange on the end of the driveshaft. The one that bolts to the rear axle. I had the same thing happen, and it was the 4 bolts that attach the driveshaft to the rear axle. they just weren't tight enough. I'd check that if i were you.
Ill tell you, Its something in the trans. its the spider gearset. if you have towed this bitch for awhile it will have caused a problem in the diff, check the spider gears and bearings. if loose have em replaced and clunk should go away
Hey everyone,
I want to thank all of you for your replies.
I found out what was causing the clunk.
My good friend who has been helping me fix my truck since I purchased it forgot to put the nuts on my new engine mounts. When we lifted the truck we noticed the engine and tranny leaning to one side, we lined it up and took care of that problem. The other thing we found was that we were missing one of the brackets that connect from the crossbar(where the tranny sits on)to the frame of the truck. There was never one there, this is something that the previous owner forgot to put back on, so I went ahead and called the dealer for one but they told me that they will call me tomorrow to see if they have one locally or they will have to special order it($20.00), I know I could probably pick one up at the junkyard but I really don't have the time.
Thanks again everyone!
