1967 charging problem

I bought a 1967 f250 last week... the truck needs a lot of work to be nice but the only thing really keeping it off the road now is fact that the alternator won't charge the battery.

The wiring has been jerry rigged, clearly by someone that didn't know what they were doing. on the alternator the posts are as follows,

Bat- positive terminal of solinoid
Fld- F plug on regulator
Ground- grounded to the frame

The alternator and regulator were just replaced so i am assuming there is a wire missing or done wrong.

If you have gauges in the dash, see if it's hooked up like this. If you have a "gen" light in the dash, it will be hooked up a little bit different.

So I checked and there is not a gen light in the dash, but i do have a volt gauge. As far as the diagram goes, everything is wired the same as it's shown, except my ground post is grounded and the sta post has nothing... if the S post needs to be connected to the choke, where would it go? or where would it go otherwise

If you do not have a electric choke, then nothing is hooked to the "sta" post.

So if it's hooked up like the diagram above, just to make sure measure the voltage at the battery with the truck running. It should be around 14v if it's charging.

If it's not charging, then measure the voltage at the "bat" terminal on the alternator with the truck off. It should be 12v. If it's not, there is a fusible link usually in this wire that could be burnt out(if it's still there).

Make sure you have 12v on the "s" terminal of the regulator with the key in run.

Make sure you have 12v on the "a" terminal of the regulator with the truck off.

I tested all three, and all three situations had a reading, however the s terminal was reading 11.75. i'm not sure if thats a problem or not.

the a terminal read slightly higher than 12by a little bit.

And the Bat terminal was measuring fine as well.

Take the "f" wire off the alternator and tape it. Take a scrap piece of wire and hook it to the "f" terminal on the alternator, and put it over near the battery. Start the truck, and with a meter on the battery terminals, touch the scrap "f" wire to the battery +. The voltage should jump up, and the alternator may start whining and the engine may slow a little bit.

If that happens, the alternator is good, and I would replace the regulator. If the "f" wire got against ground at anytime when the engine was running, then that can blow the regulator, so make sure the "f" wire is in good shape and out of harms way.

ok so i tested the f terminal like you suggested and nothing... but i already replaced the alternator... the way the cooling fins on the alt. pulley are set makes it seem that they wouldn't be pushing air through from the front of the alternator because of the way the belt is spinning... will the alternator charge no matter which way it's spinning or does it have to go a certain way?

It will charge no matter which way it turns. You may want to take the alternator to the store and get it tested. Hopefully it's still under warrenty.
