I have a 1989 5.8, and i'm trying to diagnose what i think is a vacuum hose that is disconnected. It's at the rear of the engine, near the firewall, slightly on the drivers side. it's a 3 way union, the bottom comes from the valve cover, the middle goes over to the other side, and the top is smaller. there is no tubing on it, and it is whistling like crazy. i can't figure out what should connect there.
any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm stumped.
You say valve cover (PCV valve) so I am thinking large vacuum hoses.
Other large hoses would be the Brake Vacuum Booster, Speed Control Actuator.
Maybe also to a vacuum manifold, A/C vent system or if you have an C6 transmission the TV or the rear of the transmission.
These are the vacuum hoses that are not on the vacuum diagram that you have under the hood
It sounds like the hose for the pcv valve . ??? On a 5.8 i think it goes into the back of the intake . You may have to get on top off the motor to see it .
thanks guys. it is a small vacuum hose, the other two hoses on the union are bigger. i have a 4 speed transmission with o/d. i did try to read my vacuum diagram on the valve cover, but i can't make everything out.
thanks, this doesn't look the same as mine. i have 2 (div) at the top of the chart. i am sure now the 3 way connector that i am talking about comes from the pcv valve and then definatly goes into the intake. my "missing" problem is right about this on the same connector. Could it just be a missing cap? I just didn't want to cap something that is supposed to go somewhere.
the label says it meets all states and calif. emissions and is certified only for heavy duty use. it's on a f-250 service body.

i mean to say here, the hose comes out of the pcv, then goes into the intake. like on the 5.0, but there is another port, that is a smaller hose size, inbetween the pcv and intake.
i have a picture. can i post it here?

Reason: picture
If you post the Calibration Number off your door post (or under the hood) then I can post the right one for your truck.
I posted the one for light duty, sorry I did not see where you said yours was heavy duty.
Just post back the Acronyms, Abbreviations that you do not know and we will help you with them.
Here are some of them:
AIR BPV = AIR ByPass Valve
CPRV = Canister PuRge Valve
CARBON CAN = CARBON CANister
EVR = Egr solenoid Vacuum Regulator valve assembly
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve
SOLV = SOLenoid vacuum Valve assembly
MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor
VRESER = Vacuum RESERvoir
MAN VAC = MANifold VACuum
DIV = air DIverter Valve
FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator
PCV = Positive Crankcase ventilation Valve
TAB = Thermactor Air Bypass vacuum solenoid valve
TAD = Thermactor Air Diverter vacuum solenoid valve
so, if i read the diagram correctly, the pcv goes to the intake manifold, and that's it (dashed line) does the square on the dashed line maybe mean a plug.
I do not see the square that you see. The dashed line are vapor line that are connected to vacuum ports.
The part sticking out at the top of the PCV valve I think they are just showing where the vacuum line attaches.
so do you agree then that there should be only one vacuum hose coming out of the pcv valve, according to the diagram?
the top of my pcv valve has two ports.

Yes and I do see the little square by the Vacuum source for it, I have no idea what that is as I have never seen a PCV hose with a restrictor in it.

Are you talking about the other end of the hose where it pushes onto the intake?
If so there could be a lot of vacuum ports there and some of them may have caps on them.
the ports are definately on the pcv. it could be the wrong one, but it says motorcraft on it. the pcv and the two oulets come apart, so maybe it was added. or maybe a cap was on it and it cracked and fell off.
this is why i am so stumped, but i can't figure where else another hose would go.
