hi all, normally I dont post here, as I have a gas truck (300 I6) but my buddy just bought a 94 F350 crew cab long bed dually. its got the 7.3 non turbo powerstroke with 197,xxx miles on it. what should he look out for, maintiance wise. also, this may be a dumb question, but the truck blue smokes on startup, which he believes is the rings letting oil by, but his father says its the fact that the truck is non turbo, and to end the debate, I figured Id ask experts. also, what can he do to get more power out of it without breaking the bank.
thank you in advance for youre help.
First off it is NOT a powerstroke. All powerstrokes are turboed direct injected and electronically controlled.
Blue smoke on startup and goes away sounds like valve seals. Blue smoke has nothing to do with no turbo, he should check and clean the cdr though basically the same as a pcv valve on a gasser and if not cleaned periododicaly will cause oil consumption.
Nearly every page on here has performance mods listed.
thanks.
it has a powerstroke sticker on the side, hmmm.........somebody got sticker happy.
i will let him know about the valve seals and cdr later today. good to know.
later today ill take a good long look through the pages of posts here, just figured while im postin, might as well throw it in there.
thank you.
On this page there is a thread called 6.9 programmer that has a list unless you want to spend some big bucks. headers are not on the list but are available.
What color are his injectors? Smoking at start up is normal for a couple of seconds (10-15), but that should be it. Worn injectors will also cause smoking starts, but ususally also smoke at idle. If the injectors are still grey they are original and due for replacement with those kind of miles.
thank you all for the responses. as for the smoke, its on startup and the first acceleration after start up. the smoke is blue. after that is goes away (90% sure, will check next time i ride with him in the daylight).
some things you can do on a n/a engine to get more power include, cutting the soup bowl out, making a ram-air intake, get a better flowing air filter make some good exaust like duals or a single good free flowing exaust, and before you ever touch the fuel you should get a pyrometer, then you can touch the fuel screw, cause you dont want to melt things
