Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

Transfer case mechanic question:
Does anyone know if it is possible to damage the transfer case enough to cause a vibration at 40 miles per hour just by changing the front and rear seals? My guess is that you could under or over torque the flange bolts and damage a bearing?
I'm asking because it looks like it happened to me after I took my X to dealer for seal repair.

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

I am definately not a transfer case mech. - hell, not even a mech. of any sort, but ANYTHING IS possible. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but does it have a damper? If so, are those bolts torqued right? Hope this is helpful (?)

Thanks for the reply Tough, yes it does have 2 dampers on the transfer case but I did not get a chance to look under and check them out. It is still in the shop waiting for some decisions.

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

If the guy who took the drive shafts out and didn't index or mark the
the flanges and the drive shaft so he could put them back in the same place you can get vibrations .they will need to keep repositioning the drive shafts to get rid of it.

Yes, I agree Rich, that is what I told the service manager at the dealer but he did not seem too interested. They still claim I need a transfer case..just hoping warranty will cover it....if not I will be seeing them in small claims court no doubt!

if it didn't vibrate before you took it in, it is their problem!! show them the work ticket where it says "replace seals", not "check out vibration". keep bitching up the chain of command as far as you need.

if the shop that replaced the seals for some reason dropped the case and seperated it to replace the seals the mechanic could have lost some of the hundreds of needle bearings inside and could cause the vibration. but one of the first things I would look at is the indexing of the drive shafts make sure the yokes are in-line when it is any position or it could be a u-joint. If you're replacing alot of u-joints and maybe the driveline is out of balance possibly the mechanic dropped the driveshaft and knocked it out of balance causeing driveline whip at certain RPM's there fore causeing vibration and premature u-joint failure even a tiny dent the size of a BB in a driveshaft can throw the whole thing out of balance

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

Thanks for the reply AZ,
No, ujoints were not changed and there were all ok. The transfer case did not need to be taken out to do the seals. All they had to do was undo the front shaft and pull out yoke. Something got screwed up but not sure what. I just dropped off a real serious letter to the service manager tonight so I shall see what happens. It looks like a war because they told me again today that it needs a transfer case. 1000.00 bucks!

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

You can completely rebuild an np205 for about 350 if you don't have too replace any of the 3 main gear sets , assuming you do it yourself-------There is a 205 , completely rebuilt , on the classifieds of this website for 600 and he might take 450 or so if you bargain with him...........fd

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

I'm going to post this on another site because the whole story is way too unbelieveable. Today I find out from the Ford dealer that they want to charge me 600 bucks in diagnose time if I want my truck. Then on top of that another 1000 for a used case! Well, after a few fists through the walls...kidding, I called the service manager, the guy I bought it from, and the actual owner of the dealership. They are going to absorb the labor to diagnose but I will have to buy the new yoke which I dont have a problem with. The only crap part is that the warranty company still has not decided how much of this that they are going to pay? If worst comes to worse I will pay for the yoke and get my X the hell out of there and to a reputable tranny shop for a second opinion, and I just happen to know of one..too bad it did not go there first..live and learn.

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

Hello all,
Well, I guess my story is over for now. Im not sure if I came out all right or not but I know Ford did.
They have installed a used transfer case and replaced the seals in it along with installing the new yoke. The warranty company is paying 60% of the repairs. I had to pay $544.29 to pick up my truck. That included labor, yoke, fluid, seals, case. For something that they may have screwed up it is not good. But the previous owner did say that he was having trouble with the old transfer case but it was ok for me. Maybe pure coincidence? Who knows?
Anyway the guy(small dealer) I bought x from is going to pay half, so all in all I guess not too bad. I just brought her home and no leaks and no vibration! Lets hope that is it for a while.

Transfer Case Q : Even I dont know?

Well I have to add just one final thing on this post. Today, I thought for fun I would just check the oil level in the used transfer case they installed a couple of days ago. I pulled out the inspection plug and a whole lot of dirty brown oil came out. Man, those guys at Ford are too much. They did not even change the fluid in the transfer case and somehow it got overfull. Anyhow I drained the damm thing and installed fresh Mercon in her.
Now that is the end of the story!!!
