Fender Radiator alignment rod?

Fender Radiator alignment rod?
My 56 did not have these two rods when I bought it and does not have the brackets to attach them. Are they necessary or are they just an improvement of not having them? Do they preform a vital function? Thanks

They certainly do a good job stiffening the front sheet metal corners and my hood gaps stopped moving around when I put them back on my 56. It was a little easier to work on the motor without them.
I guess I would say they are an improvement rather than necessary.
