Planes Create 'Total Panic' in Manhattan

NYC financial workers see low-flying planes, panic

<img src= http://o.aolcdn.com/photo-hub/news_gallery/6/1/612829/1240850266641.JPEG>

the primary presidential aircraft, a Boeing 747 known as Air Force One when the president is aboard, flies low over New York Harbor, followed by an F-16 chase plane during a federal government photo op Monday, April 27, 2009. A low-flying Boeing 747 escorted by two fighter jets as part of a federal government photo opportunity over lower Manhattan caused a brief panic among workers near ground zero on Monday

It was a heck of a lot more than two people. There were thousands of people who emptied their buildings not knowing. I think it was incredibly stupid for the appropriate government agency to NOT notify the city of their intentions.

The City of New York knew. The Feds told them last week. It's their own fault. It probably wouldn't be that big a deal if the media would stop fanning the flames.

You would think NYC would have been a little more forthcoming with the info, and given heads up to the citizens.

Mayor Bloomburg was not aware of what was going on and said in a news conference that if he had been made aware of it, he would have tried to prevent it. There were thousands of people in a panic because of this. The plane was also flying the same route as the one that went down in the Hudson after the bird strike. Once again, government fall flat on its face. What was the photo op for anyway??? Nobody is saying right now. Since Obama flipped on his position of the CIA documents and going after the Bush admin, is he trying to bring back the 9/11 conspiracies again?? Remember, we are no longer fighting a war on terror, but he will tell us later what it is. (Thats if the telepromter doesnt screw up again) But in the meantime, the Taliban is close to a area in Pakistan that has nukes.

I've heard that the gov told NYC about the photo shoot, so if Bloomburg wasn't aware of it then it is a issue that he should take up with his people. However if Bloomburg is right and NYC wasn't told about it then he has every right to be upset. Other presidents have had their teleprompters mess up so it isn't just a Obama thing.

stupid is not a word I would use for this stunt, arrogant to think it was a good idea is more appropriate, and how about the fact the country is having major financial issues with teh economy so how self centered do you have to be to decide to spend tens of thousands of tax payer dollars so you can have a cool photo for your campaign? I think someone needs to be forced to pay for this out of his salary since it only had one purpose PR and personal PR at that.

From what Yahoo is reporting the AF told the NYPD, NY and NJ about the photo shoot, but they told them that it wasn't for public release. So to an extent the gov did what they should. The NYPD should have told Bloomburg you'd think, that that part is a internal issue. The only reason I can think of off hand about not being for public release is the security issue with AFone. However you'd think that they would be thinking further ahead about what kind of a fuss it would cause.
I not sure that I would call it self-centered. I would tend to believe that it is probably common practice to do publicity shoots. Far as that goes for all we know the Dem party might be paying the bill, although I'd be somewhat surprised.

Photo shoots? Yes. Dangerous illegal aircraft flights over private citizens? not a chance.

There is no justification at all for this flight, you couldn't even justify it as a training flight it was selfish and stupid stunt that would get anyone else landed in jail and/or shot down.

Unless the president is on board, its not AF1. Its just a regular old 747. I think it was a bad idea to not make it known to the general public. Even if they had, there still would have been people calling and reporting this questionable activity... but the hype would have been much smaller.

reported on MSNBC this morning that it was kept secret.
It would be kept secret cause the planners of this stunt would have been told no way.
What actual purpose did this "fly over" serve? Photo op? For what?
And in my opinion had it only scared 2 people, after 9/11 2 is 2 many.
I can only imagine what was going through their minds seeing this and reliving that day. I know it creeped me out when I saw pics. kinda ominous and honestly just plain weird.

Lets tell everyone when AF1 is gonna be flying low over rooftops.

(Im being sarcastic, I would estimate the number of MANPADS in NYC alone in apartments held by radicals to number in the thousands.)

Bad planning on the govt part yes - but to tell everyone? worse.

It was supposed to be a photo op that captured images of an Air Force One plane with a majestic Statue of Liberty in the background..
