Bad planning on the govt part yes - but to tell everyone? worse.
As stated before, the President was not on board,so it was AF1,it was just a fancy painted 747,would not have done any harm in making the public in the area aware of what was going on.

the 747 doesnt become airforce one till the president steps foot on the plane.

What I dont understand is if this was to be a photo op to get a "cool" photo of an airforce one plane infront of lady liberty as they claim they were I have only this to say.

WTF were you doing over Manhatten. Lady Liberty is a ways off shore on an island so why the hell were you flying low over a populated city.

What the hell would be going on if that plane suffered mechanical problems or hit a flock of birds that low and crashed into the city. God the whole US would be asking for the impeachment of the idiot that authorized this crazy ignorant stunt.

They could have. I mean we got ways to use computers to generate realistic images.

I mean look at the SHIV game the pacific ocean is crystal blue on clear days but a dingy dirty grey on stormy days.

So why not save money and let a computer person make one up as you said.

What about ANY plane that flies low over cities coming in for a landing has some mechanical problems, or hits a flock of birds and crashes into a city? Would they have the "idiot" that authorized that flight and landing fired?

The statue of liberty is about a mile away from Manhattan, when you are going 200-400 MPH, 1 mile goes by pretty quick, and you need a large space to get anything done. A 747 isn't exactly the nimblest of air craft either.

While it does seem a bit odd, its not entirely un reasonable.

Lead, thats the thing 200 - 400 mph indicated on the gauge is not 200 - 400 mph land speed. Higher up you go lower the land MPH goes but point is planes dont fly low like that around city centers, its against the FAA rules last I heard.

I thought planes landed close to city centers in many cities and to do that they have to fly pretty low. But that area is restricted air space that is the differance.

#1....This was total stupidity done by the Presidential Air Group and the White House, the PAG does not report to anybody but the white house.

#2 This goes to show how some people have forgotten what happened on 9/11 and think everyhting is fine up there in NY

#3 After bashing private companies for their use of private aircraft, I dont think the federal government had any right to do this for some stupid photos of Air Force One. This flight probably cost alot more more than flying a gulf stream from CA to Washington.

In the end, this administration seems to have the attitude, we can do whatever we want, but the private sector must do what we tell them to do. Looks like business as usual in DC, but at a more extreem case now.

Planes do fly over cities but they are only allowed to fly low for landing approach in low population areas. They cant fly over city centers or residential areas under a certain altitude unless they changed that.

That would be on every channel 24/7 and on every radio station had Bush done something that dumb.

That's very irresponsible for a President to authorize something like that.

If I was in NYC and I saw a plane coming in that low and that close to a building I'd crap my pants too.

I won't go so far as to say Obama authorized that, I honestly don't believe he is dumb enough to let something like that go, but it does say a lot about the people he chooses to surround himself with.

I heard on the news last night that Obama didn't know anything about it,which in some ways is worse than if he approved it. what else is going on that he doesn't know about? They also said he was livid about what happened, but I bet we will not hear about anybody getting fired over it.
