ok, here is my problem. I recently bought a 97 F150 4.2 with the usual bad intake which caused a rod knock. I replaced the motor this weekend. She started right up, and idled like a charm. However, as soon as I gave it some gas, the hoses running to the DPFE blew right off and won't stay on. The intake gasket in the old motor went bad back in january and the truck has been sitting ever since. There was lots of coolant and stuff that got into the exhaust. When I tried taking it down the road to "blow out the exhaust" it just bogged down like crazy and melted the hoses running to the DPFE from the exhaust manifold. My guess is that all the coolant and oil that ended up in the exhaust from the bad intake gasket clogged up the cat's and is causing way too much back pressure thru the exhaust. Think I am on the right track here?
You don't have to go that far, just pull out the o2 sensors. If it runs better, then the cats are clogged. That is easier than trying to pull the cats from the manifolds and it makes a little less racket. If it is the cats, we can help you with that. You should replace the O2 sensors while you are at it, O2 sensors don't like coolant.
well that was it. unhooked exhaust from manifolds and it ran better, so s a temporary fix to get the truck on the road I cut the off and replaced with straight pipe.
this was just a temporary fix. I want to get the full exhaust replaced. just want to make sure the 2004 Mustang 3.8 I put in it works out ok before I drop more money into it.
you could have just taken the cat and knocked the guts out of it and put it right back up there.
Two problems with knocking the guts out, even a a temporary fix. Cats are worth money, but they are worth more if you know what they are. Loose catalyst is worth about ~$2 USD per lb. right now. You've got maybe 5 lbs, so you could get about $10 selling the loose stuff. Your converters kept intact for all 4 command a current market value of about $58. They are worth a lot more intact.
The actual prices you get do vary by location and who you sell to.

After putting my cats on I called a local TRUSTED salvage yard, and they wouldnt even take them for scrap. There have been alot of Converter thefts here(Memphis) and no one I called would even talk to me about buying them. Wound up pitching all 4.
Even had a co-worker have hers cut out in the parking lot at the office in broad daylight by a dude with a Battery operated sawzall.....
