You should pull the shifter cover and look at them. If it's only in 1st, I'd bet it's the #7100 sliding gear. But that gear, the reverse idler, and the smallest gear on the cluster gear are all used for Reverse... I am suspicious that it doesn't make any noise in Rev.
First things first.....big thanks to you all. Ross , Julie...you were spot on, drained the gearbox oil, a chunk of tooth came out ...so now it's strip down time i guess. I had said the noise didn't happen in reverse, just 1st......but i guess i wasn't moving quick enough going backwards (just crawling)...as i took it for a run yesterday and stuck it in reverse and i picked up speed the knocking noise could be heard quite clearly. So i guess i am looking at the low/reverse gear. I have only bought a few parts from dennis carpenter for my truck & looking in their catalogue i cannot see the gear parts i would need, so could someone kindly point me in the right direction as where to order this part from(newbie truck owner from the uk) As soon as i have the gearbox out i will let you know for sure which gear it is. I am sure my gearbox is the standard duty transmission, it has no overdrive.
Thankyou all once again....this forum is fantastic.........
Ok...here we go...looked inside the gearbox, the low/reverse gear is well worn & has 1 tooth missing......(7100) and there is a tooth missing off (7113) too.
Now...i've seen the cluster gears for sale on ebay but i cant seem to find the low/reverse gear anywhere, could someone please help me out where to buy one from please. All these part numbers are so confusing...
I have several numbers stamped on the tranmission case
14 AF-7006-A
TAAA 7050B
AB-7222-B
57U
I can just about make out a number off the cluster gear , it reads:
WT 259 8A USA P7 FM?
My low/reverse gear is 28 teeth
my cluster gearing is still in and was harder to count but i can make out the 2nd cog and the largest cog which have 17 t & 27 t
I would be very greatfull if someone on here could point me in the right direction as where to source these parts....
I bought those same gears off eBay (1st gear sliding gear) and from VanPelt (reverse idler). Lots of folks have them. If you are OK with clean used, even more sources, including complete gearboxes (shipping is an issue).
Be sure to stock up on stuff like snap rings! I would disassemble completely before you order, there is a chance there is more damage than you first see, and a different tranny may be the best choice. Also inspect the thrust surface of case at the the cluster gear, they get chewed up and cause excessive play. This is a primary reason for popping out of 2nd. I would for sure replace the thrust washer. Good luck!
