What kind of trailer/year/make/model?

Most likely they are electriccally controlled. So your Trailer Brake controller sends a signal to the brakes to make them work.

i have a similar situation...i got a trailer house frame that im gonna convert to a flatbed, i cut it off right behind the axles but shes still 36 feet...anyhoo, it has electric brakes with two different colored wires coming from it, red and black. which is odd bc ive looked at sites online and see them with the same coloration and the site states that there is no polarity... so does anyone have any ideas short of playing with a car battery?

Polarity doesn't matter. One is +12VDC and the other is -
