C6 Trans Problem

I just aquired a 78 F250 Ranger Lariet with a 351m backed by a C6 and dana 60's. It has been a daily driver/daily project. Anywho this weekend i go to leave home and when i drop it in drive it doesnt want to engage. If u give it a lil gas it jumps a bit then goes in. once its going it does great. and it only does it in the forward gears. I talked to the previous owner and he said it done that to him so he put in a nes tranny filter and fresh fluid and it stopped. this was right before i bought it. I basically need to know what the problem is. Im gonna put in a new filter but i would rather know exactly what the deal is. He also told me it has a shift kit installed(found that one out the hard way) Thanks for any help guys

The C6 I had in my Bronco years ago did that, too. But usually only when it was cold outside. In the warm weather, it snapped right in, but when cold, it would sit there for several seconds sometimes before engaging. I never figured it out, I swapped to a 5-speed. I'm curious what caused it, though.

well im gonna try a new filter and fluid in a bit along with a valve body, thinkin maybe when the previous owner changed it the new fluid kicked up some gunk in the valve body. It will just sit there till u give her some gas

c6 tranny problem

It's more than likely the rubber o-ring in the forward clutch has become hard and brittle. When its cold the o-ring doesn't seal well enough to build up pressure and engage the clutch assy. Once it warms up though it will usually work fine.
The problem is it will just get worse and eventually it won't go into forward gear no matter how warm the trans. is.

I agree with mike. Had an 84 c6 do the same thing. Guy at the trans shop had me just get the trans rebuilt while it was all apart. Not sure if that was needed but figured to go ahead and put new parts in while it was tore down.

My 79 C6 did this some on first startup. I got the transmission flushed with new fluid and over 50,000 miles ago has not done it again.

I had a C-6 in my 74 F100... Never had that problem, and it gets about -40 degrees here in the winter... a few things I'd look at...

a. Fluid Level at Idle (tranny)
b. Condition of Torque Converter (if visible)
c. Condition of Tranny (check for leaks)
d. During Filter Change (while pan is off), clean the pan thorougly.. but before this is done, run a magnet over or through the remaining fluid in the bottom of the pan and see if your picking up any metal shavings... if so, I'd look into a rebuild soon.
e. Check the current condition of the filter... if the filter is getting excessively dirty or completely clogged in a short amount of time, it might also need a good service.

These are all things I'd personally check before to much longer.. also, it may be the differentials in temperature as well... in cold weather, rubber seals have trouble sealing until they warm up to expand. That's why so many vehicles leak at first in my state.. the cold winters. But, check these things and please reply to the affects.
