i tested my 4 wheel drive again, since it hadn't leaked in a while. i went to a rocky area, used the truck in 4 high and 4 low. didn't notice a leak. put 'er back in 2 high, went home, and i see oil again at the end of the axle (by dust shield near right tire). the first time i noticed a leak, it was the same situation. a short drive after testing 4x4, is when i noticed the oil.
So, it appears the oil only comes out when i'm using 4x4. the oil level was correct before the test. is this something to worry about? What should i do? Thanks!
You can either tear into it and fix it, or pay someone or just keep and eye on the fluid level. If it only happens when you use 4x4 how often is that? As I said before I have replaced mine, not a real bad job if you have the tools and knowhow.
thanks Daniel, just looking for that precisely, if that's the case (it's ok just to keep fluid level up) then for now i'm going to just keep an eye on it, not a heavy 4x4 user. thanks for the reassurance! I just thought it was weird that it only leaks when i use 4WD. guess it's building up some pressure and squirting past the seal. Thanks!
I would just keep an eye on the fluid, it won't leak out fast. Those inner axles seals are a bit of a pain to replace, you have to pull the carrier out.
will do, thanks again! Now... off to my local bilstein dealer, and see if they can match the price i see online ($55 each). then, back to pricking and combing my radiator. i feel like i'm doing an afro job on someone.
